One interpretation could be that peoples’ opinions are relative to their point of view. For example, “hoog” is next to “dieper” in the poem. These two can be equivalent to each other since “hoog” is not as high as “hoger” and “dieper” is indeed deeper or lower than “diep”. The left side of the poem makes perfect sense within itself but the right side is written upside down and makes no sense since “diepst” is at the top and “hoogst” is at the bottom. If the reader changes his perspective, however, and turns the poem upside down, this half makes sense again and it is the other half which makes no sense.
