Introduction

Section 6 of the QAA Code of practice on Assessment of students, 2000, to ‘ensure that appropriate feedback is provided…in a way that promotes learning and facilitates improvement.’ (Quality Assurance Agency, 2000)

Student use of tutor feedback has been identified as one of the weak links in the assessment chain.

In 2006 I presented a paper on Using feedback Effectively, based around a form which encouraged students to

- unpack the feedback

- prepare for a tutorial

- get more out of a tutorial

- action plan to act on feedback

- try out selected resources

Burke, D. (2007) ‘Getting the most out of feedback:’ in Nutt, D. & Tidd, J. (Eds) 1st European First Year Experience: Conference April 2006, pp. 36- 49, Teesside, University of Teesside.

The UK National Student Survey continues to record student dissatisfaction with feedback, both in terms of the quality of the feedback and the time lag between handing in and return on work.

Yorke, M & Longden, B. (2008) The first- year experience of higher education in the UK: Final Report, York: Higher Education Academy.

This webfolio addresses issues about feedback by exploring how students can get more out of tutor feedback on their work through:

- helping students address issues in feedback through hyperlinks to selected electronic sources

- exploring the way essay feedback proformas help to feedback/ feedforward

- using linked webfolios

- helping students prepare for essay feedback tutorials

- use of a template to help staff conduct feedback tutorials

- preparing students for feedback by explaining the structure of feedback forms
